FFVIII: Choices

"You're offering me a choice?"

Squall stands there, one hand on his hip, and Seifer aches for the familiarity of it. Wishes that he wasn't bound hand and foot with handcuffs, wishes that he could take Squall in his arms and kiss him, just kiss him, and hold him. He also wishes he could make any sense of what Squall is saying, but confused and recovering from mindfuck and drugs, and caught up in a sudden rush of desire for him, Seifer doesn't have a chance.

"Yeah. A choice. Another chance. You come back to Garden with me, or you stay here and rot."

"I'll have a trial, soon. They'll decide to release me, that I was under Ultimecia's control..."

"I'm offering you a chance to redeem yourself." Squall folds his arms in front of him, leans back against the wall, casual and relaxed and so god damned fucking perfect looking that Seifer tugs a little at the handcuffs and only succeeds in hurting his wrists. "Don't redeem yourself, they let you rot away in here. They'll delay your trial, delay it and delay it and delay it. People hate you, all of them. Come with me."

"Do I get some time to decide?"

"As much as you want."

Squall gathers himself up then, pulls himself in and retreats, hiding all his emotions and slipping out of the cell as suddenly as he arrived.

Seifer longs to call him back for more than just talking.

It's a relief to be out of the chains, a relief to walk out beside Squall and stretch and find himself falling back into place, arrogance and the cocksure pace of his stride all returning as quickly as the rush of warmth and love for Squall he felt the minute he saw him standing in that cell and offering a choice.

He'd said he needed time to decide, but he'd known what he'd choose.

"They don't want you, back at Garden."

Seifer stops and grabs Squall's wrist, turning him. The train they have to catch doesn't leave for another half an hour, and Seifer knows they have time to talk in the relative privacy of the empty road. "Why am I going back there, then?"

Squall won't say it, but he looks up at Seifer and Seifer smirks at the sudden certainty he feels. He suspected it, maybe, thought that maybe it was simply Squall's will that has him going back to Garden, another option, another path to take, approval teased and bullied and won from Cid.

"So you want me, huh?"

"I suppose."

"Stupid bastard. Missed you."

It's almost a peace offering, and Squall laughs softly when Seifer holds his arms out, and then he steps forward into Seifer's embrace. "You're the stupid bastard who followed a sorceress."

"You're the stupid bastard who got in my way," Seifer teases, and suddenly crushes him closer, holding onto him tightly. "Do you forgive me?"

"Never."

Irrationally, that pleases Seifer, and he kisses Squall's forehead softly, brushing brown hair out of the way. "Good. I don't deserve it."

"Whatever. Let's go catch our train."

They've never really made sense to anyone but each other.

-----

It was as easy as finding his old arrogance to return to living with Squall. They share Squall's room, though somewhere in the dormitory area is an empty room with Seifer's name on the door. It's as simple as that, as simple as it always has been.

Seifer slams the door after him and Squall huffs softly, speaking without even looking up. "I like having a door to this room, you know. I'd rather you didn't break it."

Once upon a time, Seifer might have started a fight. He almost does, but instead he moves to sit down next to Squall and rests his head against his lover's shoulder. "Sorry," he sighs, and he sneaks an arm around Squall, snuggling closer, "just that they're really pissing me off today. You were right, when you said they don't want me back here. They really don't. And... they've been talking about going to Cid about you."

Do one thing people don't like and the dissatisfaction builds up. Seifer knows that from experience and Squall knows that by instinct. Squall sighs and puts his book aside, reaching up to run his fingers through Seifer's hair. "Forget it. I don't care. Let them."

"You do care."

"Not as much as I do about... other things."

"You mean me."

It still brings a smirk to Seifer's face, that knowledge that Squall wants him, cares for him, maybe even loves him, and he doesn't bother to hide it. He kisses Squall's jaw softly as Squall's rolls his eyes, as if in despair at Seifer's arrogance.

"I care, too. I don't want you to lose your job because -- "

"Shut up."

"You know that if you lose your job, it's because people hate you for helping me. You can't sugarcoat that, Squally."

"Shut up."

Squall kisses him, rough and eager, and Seifer surrenders to it. For now.

"You are offering me a choice?"

Seifer folds his arms in front of him and rolls his eyes. "Yes, Squally-boy, I am offering you a choice. People hate having me here, hate that you're fucking me, hate to think of their precious commander waking up in bed with everyone's favourite world enemy number one. So you've got to make up your mind. Do you want to stay, or do you want to leave Garden?"

"Why would I want to leave...?"

"Because I am."

Squall stares at him and Seifer grabs him, the cold front he's putting up snapping. He yanks Squall close and into his arms and holds him tight, face buried in his hair. "I'm fucking things up for you. If I leave, sure, people will come after me. But I've already proved I'm not quite the bad guy. If I'm caught, the trial should be quick and I should be proved innocent."

Squall stands there for a moment. He doesn't ask for time to think about it. He just silently asks whatever is out there for the courage to follow the right path. And then he grips Seifer's shirt hard.

"You're not getting caught."

"Oh?"

"I'm coming with you."

Seifer smiles. "Thought you would be, babe."
