Summary: Garnet is so lonely and Beatrix is little comfort. For [livejournal.com profile] madain_sari.

"Is there anything you need, Princess?"

Beatrix is stiff and formal and straight backed, a soldier from top to toe. Garnet feels uncomfortable around her, and lonelier than ever in her presence. There's something hard and cold in Beatrix that comes from unquestioningly serving a Queen going to ruin.

"There's nothing," Garnet says, softly, and then she looks up at Beatrix, biting her lip, hopeful and unsure. "Can you... talk to me? I... It's an odd request, I know, but I'm lonely."

Beatrix doesn't relax. "Permission to sit down, your highness?"

"Of course."

Garnet's warmth doesn't melt Beatrix even a little. She's fifteen and dutiful and lonely, reaching for the people closest to her station for solace and getting nothing. She sighs softly and Beatrix sits down, hands folded in her lap, back straight.

"Is there anything you want me to talk about, Princess?"

"Anything you like."

"I don't know what would be of interest to you, your highness," Beatrix says, quietly, and then she hears the hitch in Garnet's breath and can't help herself, reaching to lift the girl's chin. Her eyes are full of tears. Such a young girl, despite everything. Beatrix softens. "Is there something wrong, Princess?"

"Please don't call me Princess," she says, quietly, reaching up to scrub the tears from her eyes. Beatrix stops her, not wanting her to redden her eyes, and carefully wipes the tears from Garnet's face with a soft tissue.

"Please don't cry," she says, and manages to stop herself just before she says 'Princess' again.

"I'm lonely," Garnet whispers, and Beatrix dares to move closer, curling an arm around Garnet. She knows the feeling. Oh, how she knows. There was a time when she and Brahne could talk. She supposes that the coldness Brahne has come to treat her with extends to her daughter, too. She barely seems interested anymore.

"I'm here, Princess," she says, softly, and kisses Garnet very gently, tasting the salt of her tears.
