Summary: It comes in dreams.
Quistis is overwhelmed a little when she remembers exactly what Ellone means to her.
It comes in a sort of dream that might or might not be Ellone's fault. Quistis wouldn't mind if it was, because the moments are so precious and pure and crystalline they can only be real. Quistis being all big sisterly and scolding, only for Ellone to come and be gentle and understanding and get more done. Quistis understands how Ellone could've moved nations, if she'd become Adel's successor.
And then the sweet soft-edged memories. Just the two of them picking flowers. Flowers in Quistis' hair, falling out onto the grass, a flower tucked behind Ellone's ear. Laughing and telling stories to the other, the two of them weaving around each other just right.
Ellone's sweet smile when Quistis couldn't sleep, when she crawled into bed with her. The way they held each other, arms curving round each other's waists, fitting together just right, always just right.
Quistis cried when Elle left, but she remembers thinking she had to be strong. That's what Ellone left behind her for them all, strength, and Quistis needed it.
She can't think now how she forgot. When she wakes, she buries her face in her pillow and cries for all the time wasted, all the things that maybe should have could have been done.
Ellone visits Garden only days later and won't meet her eyes. So Quistis lets her evade, for now, but not for long.
Squall leaves Ellone to her for an hour or so while he finishes up work, so she takes Ellone's hand in hers, awkwardly, like she's remembering how. "I missed you, Elle," she says, softly, and Ellone looks up at her, mouth soft, eyes shining, and what can Quistis do but kiss her?
And it's just right, just like it used to be.
