Zidane is driving Steiner absolutely mad.
Garnet gave him an order, near as damn it, to shut up, when she glared at him after about the third battle. But he can't stand the way Zidane struts and bounces and laughs when they win a battle. He hasn't fought in so long, it's just like Zidane keeps saying. He's rusty. Not just his armour.
But he couldn't really admit that, could he?
So he lets Zidane's ease in the middle of the battle sting him. He's doing his best, of course. Protecting the Princess. And if he's distracted, it's only because he's so worried about her safety. Worrying about getting her home safely to Queen Brahne. And not just because it's his life on the line if he doesn't. He couldn't stand Beatrix's contemptuous look if he messed this up as well.
Zidane annoys him more than anything, but maybe that's just because he's so at ease and comfortable and his fighting is smooth and practiced and easy. And maybe it's also because of that nickname he has for him.
"Oi, Rusty!"
The potion hits him in the armour with a clang and he wants to sulk, but he bends down and picks up the potion, and meets the Princess' eyes for a moment to see her smiling at him in encouragement.
He walks on before she can comment that it's nice to see them getting along.
